Four Square Pudding

- Remove crusts from bread slices and spread with butter.
- Cut bread into squares and arrange in layers in a greased 8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle each layer with raisins and bran.
- Beat egg yolks until smooth.
- Add 2 tablespoons of sugar, nutmeg, milk, and vanilla; mix thoroughly.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread layers.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 35 minutes.
- In the meantime, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form, gradually adding the remaining sugar to make a meringue.
- Spread the meringue over the baked pudding and return to the oven.
- Bake in a slow oven at 300°F (150°C) for about 20 minutes or until meringue is lightly browned.
