Ingredients

  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 large onions, sliced thin
  • 1/2 (1 lb.) loaf French bread
  • 6 large tomatoes, sliced thin
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped basil
  • 3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese

Instructions

  1. Sauté the sliced onions in butter for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  2. Butter a casserole dish.
  3. Layer slices of French bread in the casserole dish.
  4. Add a layer of sliced tomatoes over the bread.
  5. Sprinkle chopped basil and grated Monterey Jack cheese between layers.
  6. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used, ending with cheese on top.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes until hot and bubbly.
