Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups very warm water (105~ to 115~F)
  • 2 packets or cakes yeast
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted margarine or oil
  • 7 cups unsifted flour
  • cornmeal (optional)
  • 1 egg white mixed with 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Add yeast to very warm water and mix well in a large bowl.
  2. Add salt and melted margarine or oil; mix.
  3. Add all 7 cups of flour at once.
  4. Mix well with a spoon or by hand.
  5. Dough will be somewhat sticky.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl.
  7. Do not knead the dough.
  8. Let rise until doubled in bulk.
  9. Punch down and divide into 2 portions.
  10. Roll each portion into a rectangle.
  11. Starting at the long side, roll up into a loaf and tuck ends under.
  12. Place on a greased cookie sheet sprinkled with cornmeal.
  13. Let rise until doubled and brush tops with the egg white mixture.
  14. Bake at 450°F until browned.
