Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Cream together shortening and sugar.
  2. Add beaten eggs and mix well.
  3. Stir in flour, vanilla, salt, and baking powder until combined.
  4. Spread the batter 1/4-inch thick in a greased flat pan.
  5. Beat egg whites with brown sugar until stiff peaks form.
  6. Spread the meringue mixture evenly over the batter.
  7. Bake in a 350°F oven until the top turns lightly brown.
  8. Cool slightly, then cut into squares.
