- Cover cucumbers, onions, and salt with ice; let soak for 3 hours. Pour off water.
- Mix remaining ingredients and add cucumbers and onions to the vinegar mixture. Bring to a boil.
- Boil for 5 to 10 minutes. Fill hot jars with the pickles.
- Add 1 clove garlic, 1 sprig dill, or 1 teaspoon dill seed to each jar.
- Seal jars and let stand for a few days before serving.
