Ingredients

  • 1 slice salt bacon
  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 package dried split peas, washed and drained
  • 12 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 package Lipton golden onion soup mix
  • 1 package knockwurst hot dogs, chopped

Instructions

  1. Dice the salt bacon and sauté it with the diced onion until browned.
  2. Add all ingredients—including the bacon and onion mixture, ham hock, potatoes, split peas, water, thyme, onion soup mix, and chopped knockwurst hot dogs—into a Dutch oven.
  3. Cook for 6 hours, stirring occasionally if desired, until the peas and other ingredients are tender and flavors meld.
