Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating at medium speed of an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg and beat well.
  3. Stir in molasses.
  4. Sift flour and cocoa together; stir in baking soda, ground ginger, and salt.
  5. Add to creamed mixture, stirring well.
