Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • confectioners sugar icing
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 5 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together.
  2. Add the egg and beat well.
  3. Stir in the molasses.
  4. Dissolve the baking soda in 1 cup hot water.
  5. Add alternately with salt, ginger, and flour to the egg mixture.
  6. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.
  7. Bake at 375°F for about 15 minutes.
  8. Frost with confectioners sugar icing.
