Ingredients

  • 1 cup margarine, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 teaspoons vinegar
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream together sugar and margarine.
  2. Stir in egg and molasses. Add vinegar and beat well.
  3. Sift dry ingredients including soda, cloves, salt, ginger, and cinnamon.
  4. Stir in the sifted dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  5. Mix well until dough is smooth.
  6. Chill the dough overnight.
  7. Place one small ball of dough on a greased cookie sheet and flatten with palm to make the head.
  8. Roll one ball into a straight rope for the arms.
  9. Roll the last ball into a rope and curve it to form the legs and body.
  10. Garnish the cookies with nuts or raisins before baking.
  11. Bake on a greased cookie sheet, leaving room as they expand.
  12. Allow cookies to cool before removing.
