Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • raisins

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Blend in molasses, water, flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice.
  3. Cover the dough and chill for 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured cloth-covered board.
  5. Cut into gingerbread boy shapes with a cutter.
  6. Place the cutouts on ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Press raisins into the dough for eyes, nose, and buttons.
  8. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
  9. Remove immediately from the cookie sheet.
  10. Cool and decorate as desired.
