A hearty, flavorful bean stew combining mixed beans, ham, and aromatic seasonings, perfect for comforting gatherings or family dinners with a touch of Southern flair.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. pinto beans
  • 1 lb. small lima beans
  • 1 lb. split peas
  • 1 lb. black turtle beans
  • 1 lb. lentils
  • 1 lb. black-eyed peas
  • 1 lb. ham pieces

Instructions

  1. Mix 1 pound of each type of bean and rinse 1 1/2 cups of the mixed beans.
  2. Soak the beans overnight in water.
  3. Drain the soaked beans and add 2 quarts of water along with at least 1 teaspoon of salt.
  4. Add ham pieces to the pot.
  5. Cook slowly for 3 hours.
  6. Add chopped onion, minced garlic, Ro-Tel tomatoes or plain tomatoes, and lemon juice.
  7. Simmer the mixture for an additional 2 hours.
  8. Serve hot, ideally with cornbread.
