Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour milk (add 1 tablespoon vinegar to milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  3. In a bowl, blend the brown sugar, white sugar, sifted flour, and shortening until crumbly.
  4. Set aside 1 cup of this mixture for the topping.
  5. In another bowl, mix sour milk (with 1 tablespoon vinegar), eggs, vanilla, salt, and baking soda until combined.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  8. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture evenly over the batter.
  9. Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow to cool before serving.
