Ingredients

  • 15 medium tomatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 slices white bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, melted

Instructions

  1. Begin 1 1/2 hours before serving time.
  2. Heat peeled and quartered tomatoes in a 3-quart saucepan to boiling, stirring constantly.
  3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until tomatoes are soft, about 10 minutes.
  4. Uncover and cook for 15 minutes longer, stirring until slightly thickened.
  5. Stir in brown sugar, tomato paste, salt, and bread cubes.
  6. Mix well and serve either warm or chilled.
