Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine while simmering. If you don’t have ground beef, ground turkey or lamb can be great alternatives. To enhance the Mediterranean flavors, try including some diced olives or capers. Adjust the cinnamon to your taste; it adds warmth but can overpower if used excessively. Pair this soup with Mediterranean recipes for a well-rounded meal.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this Greek soup hot, garnished with fresh parsley or a sprinkle of feta cheese for added flavor. It pairs wonderfully with crusty bread or a side salad for a complete meal. Consider serving it alongside Greek Meat Rolls(Souzoukakia) for a delightful dinner. A dollop of yogurt can also be a refreshing addition.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When reheating, do so on the stove over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions, but add a splash of water to keep the soup from drying out.

What can I substitute for potatoes?

If you prefer a lower-carb option, you can substitute potatoes with cauliflower or zucchini. Both will absorb the flavors well and contribute to the soup's texture without the starch.

Is this soup suitable for freezing?

Absolutely! This soup freezes well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to freezer-safe containers. It can be stored for up to 3 months. When you're ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat on the stove.
