  • 3 Tbsp. Crisco oil
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup Crisco
  • 4 eggs
  • cayenne pepper
  • watercress

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions; finely chop half of one and cut the other half and the second onion into rings.
  2. Mix the chopped onion with the ground beef and seasoning, including cayenne pepper.
  3. Divide the mixture and shape into four burgers.
  4. Heat the oil in a skillet and fry the burgers for about 5 minutes on each side, adding the tomatoes halfway through the cooking.

  6. Add the eggs to the same skillet with the remaining Crisco and fry until cooked to your liking.
  7. Top each burger with a fried egg and sprinkle cayenne pepper on the eggs.
  8. Arrange the burgers on plates with the fried onion rings, tomatoes, and watercress as garnish.

Tips & Substitutions

For a juicy burger, use a higher-fat ground beef, such as 80/20. You can substitute Crisco oil with olive oil for a healthier option. If you want to add more flavor, consider mixing in garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce with the beef. For a vegetarian twist, try using black bean patties from vegetarian recipes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the burgers on toasted buns with your favorite condiments, like mayonnaise or mustard. They pair wonderfully with crispy fries or a fresh salad. Consider serving alongside Potato Frank Chowder for a hearty meal or offer a refreshing Frosted Punch as a drink option.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover burgers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through, or use the microwave for about 30 seconds. If the eggs are already on the burgers, it’s best to reheat them in the skillet to maintain texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these burgers ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the burger patties in advance and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Just make sure to separate them with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Cook them just before serving for the best taste and texture.

What can I use instead of eggs?

If you want to avoid eggs, you can use a vegan egg substitute like flaxseed meal mixed with water or even a slice of avocado on top for creaminess. This will change the flavor slightly but still provide a delicious alternative.

Can I grill these burgers instead of frying?

Yes, these burgers can definitely be grilled! Preheat your grill and cook them for about 5-6 minutes per side, depending on your desired doneness. Grilling will add a nice smoky flavor that complements the toppings beautifully.
