Ingredients

  • 1 cup toasted, chopped hazelnuts
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon hazelnut liqueur (optional)
  • 1 (6 oz) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Line a large baking sheet with foil and sprinkle 1/2 cup toasted, chopped hazelnuts onto the center of an 8-inch square piece of foil; set aside.
  2. Butter the sides of a heavy 1-quart saucepan and melt the remaining butter.
  3. Add brown sugar and water to the saucepan and stir over medium heat to boiling.
  4. Cook to soft-crack stage (280°F), then remove from heat.
  5. Stir in hazelnut liqueur if using, and pour the caramel mixture over the hazelnuts on the prepared foil.
  6. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot caramel and let stand for 2 minutes.
  7. When the chocolate is soft, spread it evenly over the caramel.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining hazelnuts on top.
  9. Allow the toffee to cool completely, then lift from the pan and break into pieces.
  10. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
