Hojalda are crispy, golden fried bread slices with a light, airy interior and a satisfying crunch, perfect for breakfast or snack time, enjoyed by all ages.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon peanut or vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the egg, oil, and milk.
  2. Add the self-rising flour and mix well.
  3. Flour a large piece of waxed paper.
  4. Remove the dough from the bowl and knead for about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle on flour as needed to prevent sticking.
  6. If the dough becomes too dry, wet your hands with oil.
  7. Work the dough into a roll and place in an empty bread sack to set overnight.
  8. Heat oil in a large pan or kettle.
  9. Cut the dough into pieces.
  10. Stretch each piece slightly and deep fry until light brown.
