  • 2 (8 oz.) cream cheese
  • 1 small jar dried beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 loaf sourdough or rye bread

Instructions

  1. Mix sour cream, cream cheese, dried beef, minced onion, and minced bell pepper in a bowl and set aside.
  2. Cut the top out of the loaf of sourdough or rye bread.
  3. Remove the middle of the bread, leaving an empty shell.
  4. Fill the bread shell with the mixed ingredients and replace the top.
  5. Double wrap the bread in foil.
  6. Place the wrapped bread on a cookie sheet and bake at 350°F for 2 1/2 hours.
  7. Remove from oven and serve hot with Fritos or other chips.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, blend the cream cheese with the sour cream until smooth before mixing in the other ingredients. If dried beef is unavailable, you can substitute with chopped cooked ham or turkey. Consider adding spices like garlic powder or cayenne for an extra kick. This dip can also be served with assorted veggies for a healthier option.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this dip hot directly from the bread shell for a rustic presentation. It pairs beautifully with Fritos or tortilla chips, but you can also offer fresh veggies like carrots and celery for dipping. For a complete spread, consider serving with other appetizers or side dishes like a simple salad or a platter of cured meats.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, wrap the dip in foil and place it in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 15-20 minutes, or until heated through. Avoid microwaving, as this can make the bread soggy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dip ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dip mixture a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just fill the bread shell and bake it on the day of serving for the best flavor and freshness. This makes it a convenient option for parties or gatherings.

What if I can't find dried beef?

If dried beef is hard to find, you can replace it with cooked and chopped bacon or even diced salami for a different flavor profile. Both options will add a savory, meaty element to the dip that still works well with the creamy base.

Can I use a different type of bread?

Absolutely! While sourdough and rye are traditional, you can experiment with any sturdy bread like pumpernickel or a crusty baguette. Just ensure the bread can hold the dip without becoming too soggy during baking.
