Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • a dash of salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa.
  2. Combine the shortening, sugar, eggs, and 1 cup hot water.
  3. Blend well.
  4. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients, mixing well.
  5. Add vanilla and the remaining 1 cup hot water.
  6. Blend until smooth.
  7. Turn the batter into three greased 8-inch pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 30 to 35 minutes.
