Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Put shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl; cover with boiling water.
  2. Sift dry ingredients and add to hot mixture.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla, then stir until smooth.
  4. Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 45 minutes.
