Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients into a bowl together and beat 50 quick strokes with a fork.
  2. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch pan.
  3. Sprinkle the top with 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup chopped nuts.
  4. Dot the surface with about 2/3 cup jam or jelly.
  5. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 375°F.
  6. Serve warm.
