  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 c. flour

Instructions

  2. Add enough flour to make a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough until smooth.
  4. Roll out on a floured surface very thin.
  5. Cut 2 1/2-inch strips vertically and then cut on a diagonal to form diamond shapes.
  6. Make a 1/2-inch slit vertically in the center of each diamond shape.
  7. Pull one end of the strip through the slit to create a twisted shape.
  8. Fry in hot oil or Crisco until very lightly browned, turning once.
  9. Do not overcrowd the skillet during frying.
  10. Drain on paper towels and let cool.
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.

Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, ensure the dough is rolled out very thinly. If you don't have whiskey or rum, try using vanilla extract or milk as substitutes. To prevent sticking, dust your work surface with flour. If the dough becomes too dry, add a splash of sour cream or water to bring it back together. Keep an eye on the frying process, as they can brown quickly.

Serving Suggestions

Khrusty are delightful served warm with a dusting of powdered sugar. They pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or tea. For a fun twist, consider serving them alongside a fruit compote or drizzling with chocolate sauce. They also make a great addition to a dessert platter featuring other treats like Rose Freedman'S Sponge Cake.

Storage & Reheating

To store leftovers, place the Khrusty in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to keep them for longer, consider freezing them. To reheat, place them on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes until crispy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Allow it to come to room temperature before rolling it out and frying for the best results.

What type of oil is best for frying?

For frying Khrusty, use a neutral oil with a high smoke point, such as vegetable oil or canola oil. Some people prefer using Crisco for a more traditional taste, but any oil that can withstand high heat without burning will work well.

Can I bake Khrusty instead of frying them?

While frying is traditional for Khrusty to achieve their signature crispiness, you can bake them. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and place the cut shapes on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until golden brown, but they may not have the same texture as fried versions.
