Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Mix shortening, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla thoroughly.
  2. Measure flour by dipping method or sifting.
  3. Stir flour, soda, and salt together, then stir into the mixture.
  4. Form the dough into a roll 2 1/2 inches across.
  5. Wrap in wax paper.
  6. Chill until firm.
  7. Heat oven to 400°F.
  8. Cut the chilled dough into 1/8-inch slices.
  9. Place slices a little apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
