- Mix the fresh yeast, sugar, and warm water in a bowl.
- Leave in a warm place until frothy.
- Mix the salt, whole wheat flour, strong white flour, and vegetable oil in another bowl.
- Add the yeast mixture and grated onion to the flour mixture, kneading to make a soft dough.
- Knead lightly on a floured surface for 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and leave to rise in a warm place for about 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.
- Shape the dough into rolls or loaves and place on a baking tray or greased loaf pans.
- Brush the dough with a little water and sprinkle with lovage seeds.
- Leave for 20 minutes.
- Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 400°F and bake for a further 5 to 20 minutes.
- Remove from pans and cool on wire racks.
