Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening or margarine
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.
  2. Mix brown sugar, white sugar, shortening or margarine, flour, and cinnamon until crumbly. Save 1/4 cup of crumbs for topping.
  3. Add the egg to the mixture and combine well.
  4. Mix the baking soda with the buttermilk until dissolved.
  5. Gradually beat the buttermilk mixture into the sugar and flour mixture until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved crumb topping over the batter. Optionally, add a few pecans on top.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
