Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening, then gradually add sugar and beat until fluffy.
  2. Blend in well-beaten eggs slowly.
  3. Add hot water to cocoa and mix until smooth.
  4. Stir the cocoa mixture to dissolve completely.
  5. Sift together flour, salt, soda, and baking powder.
  6. Alternately add the dry mixture and the hot water and cocoa mixture to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  7. Blend in vanilla.
  8. Pour into an 8-inch square pan and bake in a moderate oven at 320-350°F for 30-55 minutes.
