- Mix dates and 1 teaspoon soda with boiling water, then let cool.
- Cream oleo, 1 cup sugar, eggs, 1 teaspoon soda, and vanilla.
- Add walnuts, flour, and salt to the creamed mixture.
- Combine the cooled date mixture with the creamed mixture and mix well.
- Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar and M&M's on top of the batter.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
