  1. Mix dates and 1 teaspoon soda with boiling water, then let cool.
  2. Cream oleo, 1 cup sugar, eggs, 1 teaspoon soda, and vanilla.
  3. Add walnuts, flour, and salt to the creamed mixture.
  4. Combine the cooled date mixture with the creamed mixture and mix well.
  5. Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar and M&M's on top of the batter.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
