Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ripe tomatoes instead of green tomatoes?

Using ripe tomatoes will alter the flavor and texture of the mincemeat significantly, as green tomatoes provide a tartness that balances the sweetness of the apples and sugar. If green tomatoes are unavailable, consider using a combination of tart apples and additional vinegar.

How long can I store the canned mincemeat?

Canned mincemeat can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to a year if sealed properly. Always check for any signs of spoilage, such as bulging lids or off smells, before consuming. Once opened, keep it refrigerated and use within two weeks.

What can I substitute for ground suet?

If you're looking for a substitute for ground suet, try using coconut oil or vegan butter for a plant-based alternative. Alternatively, finely chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans can add a rich texture and flavor, although they won't replicate the same fat content.
