Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 packet yeast
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 4 1/2 cups sifted flour

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add 1/2 cup water and melt the shortening.
  2. Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
  3. Add the yeast to the fat mixture along with the evaporated milk and molasses.
  4. Stir in the salt and soda; gradually beat in enough sifted flour to make a soft dough.
  5. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the dough into 24 balls and place into two greased 9-inch round pans.
  7. Let the dough rise until doubled again.
  8. Brush the tops with a little molasses.
  9. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for about 20 minutes.
