Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 8 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • grated rind of lemon
  • grated rind of orange

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water.
  2. Heat the evaporated milk and butter together.
  3. Allow the milk and butter mixture to cool, then combine with the yeast mixture.
  4. Stir in the beaten eggs, grated lemon and orange rinds, and chopped citron if using.
  5. Add sifted flour, sugar, and salt to the mixture.
  6. Mix well and knead until the dough is smooth.
  7. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 2 hours.
  8. Punch down the dough and shape into loaves.
  9. Allow the loaves to rise for about 1 hour.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with colored sprinkles if desired.
  11. Bake in a 350°F oven until golden brown.
