Mrs. Barrow's Rolls are soft, buttery, and slightly sweet rolls that are perfect for breakfast or dinner. Their fluffy texture and warm flavor appeal to all ages.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 2 heaping Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • about 4 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  2. Scald the milk and add it to the yeast mixture.
  3. While still hot, add shortening, sugar, and salt. Stir until dissolved and cool to lukewarm.
  4. Mix with the yeast mixture, beaten egg, and enough flour to beat with a heavy spoon or dough hook in a mixer.
  5. Beat well, then add remaining flour gradually to knead the dough.
  6. Knead the dough well and place it into a greased bowl to rise until doubled in bulk.
  7. Make into rolls and place in a greased baking dish, rolling each roll lightly in shortening to prevent sticking.
  8. Let the rolls rise until they double in size again.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
