- Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- Scald the milk and add it to the yeast mixture.
- While still hot, add shortening, sugar, and salt. Stir until dissolved and cool to lukewarm.
- Mix with the yeast mixture, beaten egg, and enough flour to beat with a heavy spoon or dough hook in a mixer.
- Beat well, then add remaining flour gradually to knead the dough.
- Knead the dough well and place it into a greased bowl to rise until doubled in bulk.
- Make into rolls and place in a greased baking dish, rolling each roll lightly in shortening to prevent sticking.
- Let the rolls rise until they double in size again.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
