- Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
- Set aside. Work shortening until soft.
- Add sugar gradually while creaming the mixture.
- Mix in molasses thoroughly.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time.
- Stir in the flour mixture and milk alternately.
- Spoon a thin layer of batter, about 1/4-inch thick, into a greased 9-inch cake pan.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 15 to 20 minutes, until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Repeat baking and layering until all batter is used, 6 to 7 layers.
- Once cooled, stack the layers with generous amounts of dried fruit or lightly spiced applesauce between each.
- Sprinkle with 10x sugar before serving.
