Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 large potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • butter or margarine (for greasing and topping)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9 x 13-inch pan thoroughly.
  2. Peel and grate the potatoes, or use a blender.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon salt to the grated potatoes.
  4. Put half of the grated potatoes in the bottom of the pan.
  5. Mix ground beef, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper, and chopped onion.
  6. Flatten the ground beef mixture into thin patties and place over the grated potatoes in the pan.
  7. Try to cover the entire surface of the potatoes with the beef patties.
  8. Cover the beef layer with the remaining grated potatoes.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes.
  10. Greas or oil the top surface of the potatoes with butter or margarine.
  11. Bake for an additional 30 minutes until nicely browned.
  12. Cut into squares and serve.
