Ingredients

  • 2 c. milk
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 1/2 tsp. ground cardamon
  • 3 beaten eggs
  • 1 c. citron or candied cherries
  • 1 1/2 c. golden raisins
  • 4 to 5 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Heat milk almost to boiling and stir in sugar, butter, and salt. Let cool to lukewarm.
  2. Add dissolved yeast mixture and stir in 3 cups of flour. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. Add ground cardamom and beaten eggs to the mixture.
  4. Mix candied fruit and raisins with 1/4 cup flour and add to the dough.
  5. Add just enough flour to make a soft dough that is not sticky, about 1 cup.
  6. Knead on a well-floured board for about 6 minutes.
  7. Cover and let rise until light, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  8. Grease two 9x5-inch loaf pans.
  9. Punch down the dough and divide in half. Place each half in a loaf pan.
  10. Let the dough rise until it doubles in size.
  11. Bake at 450°F for 10 minutes.
  12. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F and bake for an additional 50 minutes or until browned.
  13. Combine powdered sugar and milk; mix well and drizzle over cooled bread.
