Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 pound dates
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/3 teaspoon cloves
  • little salt
  • 2 teaspoons soda

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, sugar, and margarine as for pie dough.
  2. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and set aside for topping.
  3. Chop dates and nuts, then mix with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and a pinch of salt.
  4. Dissolve soda in buttermilk.
  5. Combine the remaining flour mixture with the date and nut mixture and the buttermilk mixture to form the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture on top.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
