Ingredients

  • 2 cups oats
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons dry yeast
  • 2/3 to 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 3/4 cup hulled sunflower seeds
  • 5 1/2 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over oats and salt; let stand for 1 hour.
  2. Dissolve dry yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
  3. Add yeast to oats after they have stood 1 hour.
  4. Add remaining ingredients in order: molasses, butter, sunflower seeds, and flour.
  5. Knead in enough flour to make a smooth, velvety dough.
  6. Let the dough rise until it has doubled in size.
  7. Knead down the dough.
  8. Shape into 2 loaves and place in oiled bread pans.
  9. Cover and let rise to about 2/3 of the final size.
  10. Bake at 350°F for about 1 hour.
