  • 1/4 Tbsp. salt
  • 3 Tbsp. bacon drippings
  • 1 small onion, sliced thin
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and sliced
  • 1/8 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 1 can sauerkraut (about 1 lb.)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the sauerkraut and set aside.
  2. In a heavy, medium-sized pan, heat the bacon drippings.
  3. Add the sliced onion and sauté until translucent.
  4. Add celery, dill seed, sugar, water, salt, black pepper, and stir to combine.

Tips & Substitutions

For a smoky flavor, try using kielbasa or bratwurst instead of traditional smoked sausage. If you don’t have bacon drippings, olive oil can work as a substitute. Adjust the sugar to taste based on the sweetness of your apples. If you prefer a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the mixture while cooking.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Oktoberfest Sausage Skillet hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired. It pairs beautifully with German Baked Pork And Beans or a side of crusty bread to soak up the juices. For a complete meal, consider serving it with a refreshing salad or some roasted vegetables.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. To reheat, warm in a skillet over medium heat until heated through, adding a splash of water if necessary to prevent sticking. This dish can also be reheated in the microwave for convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh sausage instead of smoked sausage?

Yes, you can use fresh sausage, but you'll need to cook it longer to ensure it reaches a safe internal temperature. Be sure to brown the sausage before adding the other ingredients to enhance the flavor.

What type of apples work best in this dish?

Sweet-tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are ideal for balancing the savory flavors of the sausage and sauerkraut. Avoid overly sweet varieties as they may overpower the dish.

Is this dish gluten-free?

Yes, the Oktoberfest Sausage Skillet is naturally gluten-free as long as the sausage and sauerkraut you use do not contain gluten. Always check labels to ensure all ingredients meet gluten-free standards.
