Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cream the shortening and sugar together in a mixing bowl. Add the egg and beat until well combined.
  2. Stir in the molasses.
  3. Dissolve the baking soda in hot water and add to the mixture.
  4. Gradually add the flour, cinnamon, and ginger, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Drop teaspoonfuls of dough onto a greased cookie sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 10 to 12 minutes until cookies are golden and soft.
