- Scald the milk and pour over the bread crumbs and butter.
- Separate the eggs; beat the yolks until thick and combine with the sugar, baking soda, salt, and vanilla.
- Add the bread crumbs to the egg mixture.
- Fold in the whipped egg whites until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture to a well oiled pudding pan.
- Set the pudding pan in a larger pan of warm water.
- Bake in a slow oven for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.
- Serve warm.
