Ingredients

  • 1/2 loaf Italian bread
  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/4 tsp. basil
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. salad oil
  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 (28 oz.) can tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 tsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Cut the Italian bread into 1/2-inch cubes.
  2. In a skillet, cook the bread cubes in butter with basil until golden.
  3. Remove the bread from the skillet and wipe the skillet clean.
  4. In the same skillet, heat salad oil and sauté sliced onions until tender.
  5. Add the canned tomatoes and sugar to the onions, and cook until heated through.
  6. Combine the toasted bread with the tomato mixture, season with salt, and bake until bubbly and slightly browned on top.
