Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 package yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Soak the yeast in 1/2 cup cold water and set aside.
  2. Cream together shortening and sugar; add 1/2 cup boiling water and mix until well blended.
  3. Add eggs to the mixture and then add the soaked yeast, mixing well.
  4. Add dry ingredients: flour, soda, baking powder, and salt; mix until a stiff batter forms.
  5. Put the batter in the refrigerator overnight.
  6. About an hour before serving, roll out the chilled dough and let it rise.
  7. Shape into rolls or cloverleaf shapes and place in greased muffin tins.
  8. Bake at 400°F until golden brown.
