Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon instant minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package RapidRise yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water (125°F to 130°F)
  • 1 tablespoon margarine softened
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Set aside 1 cup of flour.
  2. In a large bowl, mix remaining flour, instant minced onion, salt, and yeast.
  3. Stir hot water and softened margarine into the dry mixture, beating by hand for 30 seconds.
  4. Mix in only enough reserved flour to make a very thick batter.
  5. Place the dough in a greased 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
  6. With floured hands, smooth the top of the dough in the casserole.
  7. Fill a large pan with hot tap water 1 inch deep.
  8. Place the casserole in the water, cover, and let rise for 25 minutes.
  9. Break the beaten egg over the loaf before baking.
  10. Bake at 400°F for 25 minutes or until done.
  11. Loosen the bread from the casserole using a flexible spatula.
  12. Remove from the casserole and cool on a wire rack.
