- Set aside 1 cup of flour.
- In a large bowl, mix remaining flour, instant minced onion, salt, and yeast.
- Stir hot water and softened margarine into the dry mixture, beating by hand for 30 seconds.
- Mix in only enough reserved flour to make a very thick batter.
- Place the dough in a greased 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
- With floured hands, smooth the top of the dough in the casserole.
- Fill a large pan with hot tap water 1 inch deep.
- Place the casserole in the water, cover, and let rise for 25 minutes.
- Break the beaten egg over the loaf before baking.
- Bake at 400°F for 25 minutes or until done.
- Loosen the bread from the casserole using a flexible spatula.
- Remove from the casserole and cool on a wire rack.
