Ingredients

  • 2 c. thinly sliced sweet Spanish onions
  • 8 slices bread
  • 8 oz. sharp Cheddar cheese or Swiss cheese, sliced
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 2 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. dry mustard
  • 2 Tbsp. melted butter
  • 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Separate onion slices into rings and trim crusts from bread.
  2. Place 4 slices of bread in the bottom of a buttered 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
  3. Top with half of the cheese and onions.
  4. Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, cheese, and onions.
  5. In a bowl, beat the eggs and mix with milk, salt, dry mustard, melted butter, and Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, cheese, and onions.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight to allow flavors to meld.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake uncovered for about 45 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Serve warm.
