Satisfying open-face beef sandwiches feature thinly sliced deli beef layered on toasted whole wheat bread, topped with a tangy mushroom sauce for a hearty, flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 8 to 10 oz. thinly sliced, cooked deli beef
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 (4 oz.) can mushroom stems and pieces, drained
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • dash of chili powder
  • dash of ground cloves

Instructions

  1. In toaster or under broiler, toast bread slices.
  2. Cut toasted bread slices in half and arrange on a microwave-safe roasting rack.
  3. Divide the cooked deli beef into 8 portions and layer each on top of the bread halves.
  4. Let the assembled sandwiches stand while preparing the sauce.
