Ingredients

  • 3 oranges
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Combine sugar and water in a medium saucepan.
  3. Add orange slivers and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves and syrup boils.
  4. Lower heat and continue to cook for 8 minutes.
  5. Add butter and stir until melted. Cool slightly.
  6. Add reserved orange juice and beaten eggs to the saucepan.
  7. In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  8. Add dry ingredients to the sugar-syrup mixture and mix until just blended. Do not overmix.
  9. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on a wire rack.
