  • 2 qt. crumbled cornbread (no sugar)
  • 2 qt. crumbled bread (buns or white bread)
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 2 c. celery, chopped
  • 3 cans cream of chicken soup
  • enough broth to get dressing good and moist
  • 3 Tbsp. sage (approximately)
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Precook onions and celery in enough water to cover until tender.
  2. Mix all other ingredients together in a large bowl.
  3. Add the cooked onions, celery, and liquid to the bread mixture.
  4. Place the mixture in a large baking dish.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes until golden and heated through.

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding sautéed garlic or using homemade broth instead of store-bought. You can substitute the cream of chicken soup with a homemade white sauce or a different cream soup if desired. If you prefer a more herby dressing, try adding fresh thyme or parsley along with the sage. Ensure your bread is slightly stale for better texture.

Serving Suggestions

This dressing pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, especially turkey or chicken, making it a perfect side for holiday meals. Serve alongside a fresh green salad or steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. For a heartier option, consider serving it with Chicken Zesta Casserole or Mary Lou'S Chicken Casserole.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, cover the dressing with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 20-30 minutes, or until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions, adding a splash of broth to keep it moist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dressing ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dressing a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Just bake it right before serving to achieve that golden, crispy top. If you prefer, you can also freeze the uncooked dressing for up to 3 months; just thaw and bake before serving.

What type of bread works best for this recipe?

While cornbread and white bread are traditional, you can use any type of bread you prefer, such as whole wheat or sourdough, for added flavor. Just make sure the bread is not too fresh; slightly stale bread absorbs the liquids better, resulting in a more cohesive dressing.

How can I make this dish vegetarian?

To make this dressing vegetarian, simply replace the cream of chicken soup with a vegetarian version or a homemade cream soup. Additionally, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth to maintain the moisture while keeping it meat-free.
