Soft, fluffy yeast rolls with a tender crumb and slightly sweet flavor, perfect for family dinners, holidays, or as a comforting side for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 package yeast
  • 2/3 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit until frothy.
  2. Mix shortening, sugar, and egg together in a bowl.
  3. Stir in the dissolved yeast mixture.
  4. Add 2 1/2 to 3 cups of self-rising flour and mix until combined.
  5. Beat the mixture until smooth.
  6. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll into desired shapes, or refrigerate overnight before shaping.
  8. Let the shaped rolls rise for 1 to 2 hours.
  9. Bake at 375°F until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
  10. Brush with melted butter before serving.
