Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • extra flour for rolling out dough

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and ground cloves into a medium bowl.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Cream sugar and softened butter in a large bowl.
  4. Add the egg, molasses, and water to the butter mixture and mix well.
  5. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, 1 cup at a time.
  6. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Sprinkle flour onto the countertop and spread evenly.
  9. Divide the chilled dough into two balls. Roll each ball out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
  10. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes of similar size.
  11. Place the cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  12. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned on the bottom.
  13. Cool the cookies on wax paper.
