- Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger and ground cloves into a medium bowl.
- Set aside.
- Cream sugar and softened butter in a large bowl.
- Add the egg, molasses, and water to the butter mixture and mix well.
- Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, 1 cup at a time.
- Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Sprinkle flour onto the countertop and spread evenly.
- Divide the chilled dough into two balls. Roll each ball out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes of similar size.
- Place the cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned on the bottom.
- Cool the cookies on wax paper.
