Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 lb. bluefish
  • Italian style bread crumbs
  • 16 oz. vinegar
  • 16 oz. water
  • 6 to 7 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. pickling spice
  • red pepper to taste
  • raw onion, chopped or sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Remove dark meat from the bluefish and cut into 1-inch squares.
  2. Bread the fish pieces with Italian style bread crumbs.
  3. Fry the breaded fish in oil until golden brown.
  4. Let the fried fish cool completely.
  5. Mix together vinegar, water, sugar, salt, pickling spice, and red pepper to make the pickling mixture.
  6. Place the cooled fish nuggets into a bowl.
  7. Pour the pickling mixture over the fish, ensuring they are completely covered.
  8. Refrigerate and let stand for about 24 hours before serving.
