- Cream together the shortening, margarine or butter, and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Sift together the all-purpose flour and baking powder.
- Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk, a teaspoon at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in vanilla extract, undrained pineapple with juice, and blend thoroughly.
- Pour the batter into a well-greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.
- Place the pan in a cold oven and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 1 1/2 hours or until the top springs back when lightly touched.
- Remove from oven and let stand for a few minutes, then run a knife around the edge and carefully remove the cake to a cooling rack.
- Combine topping ingredients and pour over the hot cake while still warm.
